Men: Join us on Saturday, February 25 for VPC's 25th Annual Men's Retreat! We will meet at the Gainey Ranch Clubhouse starting at 7:30 am for a terrific breakfast, and then attend to our three wonderful speakers. The theme of this year's retreat is "Being a Christian Man in the 21st Century." We will also have a few contests to celebrate our 25th year (e.g., who has attended the most retreats).
Speakers:
Jerry Deck is the executive director of Presbyterian Global Fellowship. He received his BA in Communications from Lee University in 1996 and his MA in Religion in American Life from Wheaton College in 1999, before helping with refugee resettlement while working with World Relief. After graduating from Princeton Theological Seminary with his MDiv in 2003, Jerry received a Parish-Pulpit Fellowship to study in Edinburgh, Scotland. Jerry was raised in the Pentecostal tradition. He sensed God's call to ministry in the Presbyterian Church while interning in West Virginia the summer after his first year of seminary. He was attracted to Reformed theology, being able to approach faith thoughtfully, and the importance of elders leading with the pastor. Married to Megan since 2006, they have two daughters, Shauny (3 years) and Adelie (1 year). |
Growing up in an Air Force family, Dr. Maurice "Marty" Martin graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1970 and served as a rescue pilot in the US, Vietnam, and Greenland. He subsequently graduated from Covenant Theological Seminary in 1982. Marty served as Executive Pastor at Cherry Creek Presbyterian Church (CCPC) in Denver from 1988-90 and again from 2000 until 2011. In December 2004, Marty served for a two-year project as Food for the Hungry's Country Director in the Democratic Republic of Congo. On loan from CCPC, he returned to the church as Executive Pastor in 2007, while also serving as a board member of Food for the Hungry for five years. In May of 2008, he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Colorado Christian University for his work in Congo. Marty joined the Food for the Hungry staff in 2011 as one of four Global Executive Officers, specifically functioning as their Chief Operating Officer. He is based in the Phoenix Global Service Center. |
Jerry Schemmel is a radio announcer with KOA whose sports casting career spans nearly 30 years in radio and television play-by-play of several professional and major college sports, including the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Rockies. On July 19, 1989, Schemmel boarded United Airlines Flight 232, originating in Denver and bound for Chicago. An in-flight engine explosion crippled the plane and forced it to crash-land in Sioux City, IA, killing 112 of the 296 onboard. From his experience, Schemmel authored the book Chosen To Live, which chronicles the crash of flight 232 and its subsequent effects on his life. Schemmel earned a law degree in 1985 from Washburn University after receiving his undergraduate degree from the school in 1982. He grew up in Madison, SD and now resides in Littleton, CO with his wife Diane, 19-year-old daughter Maggie, and 13 year old son, Ryan. |
